The pre historic Belilena Caves, situated 8 kilometers away from Kitulgala holds the evidence of a lost generation in Sri Lanka who live more than 32,000 years ago. Ten skeletons of the Balangoda Man described as Homo sapiens balangodensis who occupied the cave were found. The cave lies along a steep path in the hillside which looks down on the Kitulgala rubber plantations providing a beautiful view along the path. Pre historic tools found in the cave which were considered to have first originated in Europe proves that the Balangoda Man has developed these tools 19,000 years before the Europeans.
