Buduruwagala

Budu (Lord Buddha) Ruwa (Image) gala (stone) also known as the rock of Buddhist sculptures is situated 5 kilometres south of Wellawaya.   As the name suggests Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka where the largest standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, which is 51 feet is found. The 1000 year old rock cut Buddha statue has traces of the original stuccoed robe and a streak of orange which shows, it was brightly painted. The large statue, surrounded by smaller carved ones, is dated back to the 10th century belonging to the Mahayana Buddhist School.
