The first time I visited Sri Lanka’s sacred Temple of the Tooth, there were monsoon rains and a deluge of barefoot visitors crammed inside. By the time I got back to my hotel, my trampled, damp toes looked like albino prunes. I hadn’t even seen the golden stupa believed to hold a tooth rescued from the last Buddha’s funeral pyre.
When I returned last month, everything felt different. The 400-year-old temple in Kandy was dry, for one thing — and eerily deserted. It was a scene that I encountered again and again on an eight-day tour of the country, looping up from the capital, Colombo, to the north, then down through the spine of the country to Galle.
