The first time I visited Sri Lanka’s sacred Temple of the Tooth, there were monsoon rains and a deluge of barefoot visitors crammed inside. By the time I got back to my hotel, my trampled, damp toes looked like albino prunes. I hadn’t even seen the golden stupa believed to hold a tooth rescued from the last Buddha’s funeral pyre.
