Ambalangoada is a coastal town in the southern province belonging to the Galle District popular for masks and antiques. Masks are part of Sri Lankan culture and used in traditional dances like ‘kolam’ and ‘sanni’, dramas, pageants and processions. Masks are also used in ceremonies held to exorcise demons and cure illnesses. At the mask museum in Ambalangoda different types of colourful hand carved masks can be seen with intricate designs in vibrant shades depicting ancient traditions. The traditional masks are made from kaduru, light pliable wood. After carving, the masks are sanded with rough leaves or shark skin.
