The Embekke Devalaya which means the Embekke
The Embekke Devalaya which means the Embekke Temple is situated in Medapalata Korale in Udunuwara in the Kandy District. The temple was built by King Wickramabahu III during the Gampola period 1357-1374 AD. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Mahasen locally known as the Kataragama Deviyo. The specialty of this temple is the beautiful wood carvings. UNESCO has identified the splendid, elaborate wood cravings on the wooden pillars to be the finest in the world. The shrine has three sections. The drummers’ hall draws lots of tourists because the marvellous wood carvings are found there.

Early History Home to years of history, which stretched far and wide. Due to the characteristic weather, the earliest explorers completely bypassed the area. The first settlement in the area was founded 1770 as a mission community. In addition to the mission, a military fort was built.
