Gadaladeniya Viharaya

The Gadaladeniya Rajmaha Viharaya is an ancient monastery in Pilimathalawa along the Colombo –Kandy road. The temple was built on a flat rock at Diggala and dates back to the 14th century. The temple was built by King Buwanekabahu IV in the year 1344. The temple is built by a South Indian architect therefore the temple is of South Indian design. The temple contains a beautifully painted giant wooden chest with paintings and sculptures which are historically and artistically significant.
