The historic Kandaswamy Temple is one of the most significant Hindu religious complexes in Sri Lanka. Temple lies about 3km away from the Jaffna town on the KKS (Kankasanthurai) Road. The annual Nallur Kovil festival attracts thousands of devotees and visitors. The temple is filled with intricate artwork and statues of gods and deities of the Hindu culture. The daily pooja or ‘offerings’ of the Temple are from 6am to 5pm.
The history of the temple dates back to the time of King Parakramabahu VI (1411-1463) of Kotte Kingdom. Nallur served as the capital of the kings of Jaffna and was a highly defensive fort and city. There were courtly buildings, the palaces, businesses and much more.

Early History Home to years of history, which stretched far and wide. Due to the characteristic weather, the earliest explorers completely bypassed the area. The first settlement in the area was founded 1770 as a mission community. In addition to the mission, a military fort was built.
