Nalanda Gedige is an ancient complete stone building near Matale, Sri Lanka. This building was an ancient Hindu Temple constructed in Nalanda. It is one of the most exceptional archaeological sites in Sri Lanka, named after the great Buddhist University at Nalanda in India, It displays a blended style of architecture uncommon in Sri Lanka, and an extraordinary merger of Hinduism and Buddhism. Although some of the designs are strictly hindu, there are no carvings or statues of hindu gods. Only corroded Buddhist carvings similar to the famous ones at Khajuraho in India are found here

A perfect city for exploring on foot with a shop around every corner. Much of the inner city can be walked without trouble, however, in parts walking include crowds, uneven streets, heavy traffic, and skinny sidewalks. If that’s a problem, there are plenty of taxi’s to ride in and scooters to rent.
Early History Home to years of history, which stretched far and wide. Due to the characteristic weather, the earliest explorers completely bypassed the area. The first settlement in the area was founded 1770 as a mission community. In addition to the mission, a military fort was built.
